San Diego City  (California)

San Diego is a city located in the extreme southwest of the state of California (United States) and, therefore, to the extreme southwest of the continental United States. The county forms the border with Tijuana, Baja California, and Mexico. Capital San Diego, the city,  is renowned for its temperate climate and numerous beaches which are extremely popular. In the 2000 census, San Diego had a total population of 1,223,400 inhabitants. It is the second largest city in California and seventh in the country.

San Diego Naval HQ

San Diego hosts several military bases, including U.S. Navy ports and Marine bases. It is also the headquarters of the largest naval fleet in the world, including two super-carriers in the Navy, the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), five amphibious assault craft, several nuclear submarines and many smaller ships. One of the two recruitment centers for the Marines is located here.

As evidence of its historical association with the U.S. Navy, several ships have been named the USS San Diego to honor the city. Naval Base North Island is also known as the Cradle of Naval Aviation in the United States, although the naval base in Pensacola, Florida, also claims that title.

San Diego Attractions

San Diego is a major tourist destination, attracting many local and foreign tourists. The weather, beaches and attractions are available in San Diego an attractive tourist destination. Since 1970, also hosts the International Comics Convention in San Diego, one of the biggest comic events in the country.

  • Balboa Park, the “Central Park” of the city with dozens of museums, the famous San Diego Zoo and beautiful landscaping. Most of the structures were originally built for the Exposition of 1915 .

  • Gaslamp Quarter, a restored Victorian downtown. Most buildings have been converted into restaurants, bars, quality shops and other establishments. Basically it is the entertainment area of the city.

  • Mission Beach Roller Coaster at Belmont Park fair and historic roller coaster located on the shores of Mission Bay.

  • Mount Soledad in La Jolla, monuments of war.
  • Old Mission Dam in Mission Trails Regional Park
  • Old Town, the ancient Spanish city.
  • Petco Park stadium in the San Diego Padres (baseball team) that is located in Gaslamp Quarter.
  • Point Loma, another section of beach.
  • Qualcomm Stadium, the stadium of the San Diego Chargers (football).
  • San Diego Aerospace Museum, Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park.
  • San Diego Presidio
  • San Diego Wild Animal Park, a very large park
  • San Diego Zoo, the famous San Diego Zoo.
  • Seaport Village, a tourist area near the sea which has restaurants and shops.
  • SeaWorld, park rides, animal shows and aquariums.
  • Star of India, historic ship.
  • Torrey Pines Golf Course, Golf Course.
  • Torrey Pines State Reserve, a nature reserve.
  • USS Midway (CV-41), aircraft carrier-museum.

San Diego is considered one of the the nation’s best historic places.
