Myrtle Beach,  South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is a city in Horry County in the U.S. state of South Carolina. After the population census in 2000 there were 22,759 people in Myrtle Beach and 196,629 in the greater Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach is located in the northeast of the state, near the border with North Carolina, between the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to the West and the Atlantic coast to the east of the city.

The greater Myrtle Beach is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. For example, the population of the city of Myrtle Beach during the period from 1 April 2000 until 1 July 2004 from 22,759 to 25,410, an increase of 11.6% over a period of approximately four years.

In Myrtle Beach and the surrounding area there are seven high schools, a university and a technical college. At the High School include: High School, Loris, North Myrtle Beach High School, Myrtle Beach High School, Conway High School, Aynor High School Carolina Forest High School, Socastee High School and St. James High School. They are on average 1200 students. On the Coastal Carolina University are 7613 students enrolled and on the Horry-Georgetown Technical College there are 5,172 students.

Myrtle Beach was uninhabited until 1900, when a railroad was built between Conway and the region where Myrtle Beach is located today. The railway was opened in 1899 in the town of Pine Island and was extended by 6.4 km in the direction of future city that would be built.

During the 1930s, the city grew with the aim of including the actual location of Ocean Forest. Canal Intercostal (Intercoastal Waterway) began to be built this decade. Myrtle Beach was incorporated as second-class city (town) in 1938, and incorporated into the primary category of city (city) in 1957, and, on this occasion, the city was renamed as “Myrtle Beach”, which is the same name of the trees of the region, and because the city is located close to very beautiful beaches.

Myrtle Beach continued to grow, and in the 1960s, the center of shopping in Myrtle Beach (Myrtle Square Mall) was built. The Myrtle Beach city has now become associated with tourism. The city’s main route, U.S. 17 Bypass, was also built in this decade.

Myrtle Beach is a well-known and widely visited beach in the U.S. and very popular holiday destination situated on the nearly 100 km long famous “grand beach”, which is also synonymous with the entire area. The economy of the Myrtle city and surrounding area are largely designed to tourism, while other industries do not exist in large scale. In summer, during the high tourist season, auxiliaries and staff for hotels and other tourism-related activities are recruited from the surrounding counties. Myrtle Beach experiences very high tourist activity, especially  during the summer season.
